Welcome to this February bulletin, an edition jam-packed full of resources. Last month we held some webinars on the NHS Highland health profiles
(in partnership with the Public Health Team) and talked about using data as evidence in your funding applications . This edition brings more information and data to help you make a case for change whether to funders or others you wish to influence.
Our Supporting Communities Fund is still open for applications until 18th March and we wish you the very best of luck with your applications. Contact us if you want to talk your ideas over.

SETTING UP A SUSTAINABLE FOOD PARTNERSHIP FOR ARGYLL AND BUTE
Argyll and Bute Council and the Third Sector Interface (TSI) are pleased to invite persons who want to spearhead meaningful change in our local food system, to participate in an online discussion about the formation of a Sustainable Food Partnership. It will take place on Monday February 26th 10-11:30am, and you can learn more and register here.
If you are involved in a community garden, a foodbank, or food waste mitigation scheme or similar you can play a part. This initiative is part of a national movement towards a healthier, more sustainable, and equitable food system, addressing the UK's most crucial social, economic, and environmental challenges. With over 85 SFPs already making strides across the UK, Argyll and Bute has the unique opportunity to join forces with public agencies, community organisations, businesses, and academics. The Scottish Government’s Good Food Nation Plan is here .

NEW RESEARCH ON SCOTTISH ISLANDS PUBLISHED
The lack of data about Scotland’s Islands was recognised in the National Islands Plan (SG, 2019), so this research, S cottish Islands Typology, 2024, looks
at some key aspects affecting daily life in the islands as well as key similarities and differences between islands. As a result this new research, aligned with existing population data, has created a new typology to categorise our islands. Argyll and Bute’s islands fit into nearly every category. This typology will support statutory work and policy but could also provide information to the third sector who are working or considering reaching out to serve island communities.

The HUB Cowal
Substance use affects more individuals and more families than we want to admit, for fear of stigma and shame. This means it can often be a very lonely and isolating experience for family members who are affected by someone else’s substance use.
The project involves developing, promoting and delivering a range of family and friend support, along with community engagement to raise awareness of the issues people may face and help to reduce loneliness and reduce the stigma.
If you feel that your organisation has something to offer and could support their work please get in touch with dee@ab-rc.org.uk More details on the poster.

TRANSPORT POVERTY: A PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE
With 52 (42%) of Argyll and Bute’s data zones falling within the 20% most access deprived data zones in Scotland, transport is a key issue for our places. This briefing
by Public Health Scotland outlines the causes of transport poverty across Scotland and details how transport poverty can influence health and health inequalities. If your organisation is looking to acquire a vehicle, or to apply for travel expenses for volunteers/community members this could be useful.

OSCR GUIDANCE
In some of their recent inquiry cases, financial management issues were a significant part of their inquiries. These issues included:
- Lack of clarity around financial controls and procedures
- Poor understanding of how financial decisions were made
- Trustees keeping financial information to themselves
- Decision making that was not collective
The aim of this report is to highlight why these issues can cause problems, and what charities can do to improve their financial management, in order to promote good governance and ensure trustees are able to meet their legal duties.
